Video Games: Some Of My Favourite Songs/Tracks

I was playing Sonic Generations recently and I found myself thoroughly enjoying the soundtrack, the series is one of my favourites of all time, it’s had its moments of being annoying, but I digress. That’s a topic for another day.

It inspired me to write a post about music from other games that I love, I could write about this all day, so I’ll just talk about a few for now, then possibly return to the topic in time.
I’ll be sharing the music via YouTube videos, I do not claim ownership of any of the content shown.

Ho-Oh Battle Theme – Heart Gold/Soul Silver

At the time of this post, because I haven’t played Sword/Shield, the remakes of the second generation are my favourite Pokémon games. The second generation was a very exciting time for me. I remember seeing the reveal of a few in Pikachu’s Vacation, the short movie that I saw when I watched the first Pokémon Movie. I remember wondering where they were in the first gen, then losing my mind when I found out there’d be a whole new region, as well as being able to visit Kanto in the same game!

Ho-oh is my favourite legendary bird from that generation. The battle theme for the Pokémon, as well the game in general got a fantastic upgrade, I love it!

I have a shiny Ho-Oh in Pokémon Go!

Spear Pillar – Super Smash Bros Brawl

This track is originally from the 4th generation of Pokémon games, but I really enjoyed this stage and the remixed version of the song in the Smash Bros series. It adds a real sense of urgency on the stage, you have to deal with the threat of other players, as well as the stage hazards, which include both Dialga and Palkia appearing and attacking the stage!

Super Sonic Racing Remix – Sonic Generations

I actually enjoyed Sonic R and its soundtrack, but the remix that was added as an unlockable track in Sonic Generations is far superior, in my opinion. I tend to add it to the doppelganger race stages, it just makes them that little bit more fun, plus I find myself dancing in my chair and singing along. It makes me very happy because it is so lively.

Can You Feel The Sunshine? – Sonic R

Sonic R is a game that holds a special game in my heart, it’s not a masterpiece by any means, but it was fun and different. It was a Sonic racing game where all the characters, minus 2 raced on foot. The soundtrack seemed so out of place, but it was memorable!

The Evil King Bowser – Super Mario World

This was the first game I ever played and completed. I used to play it with my dad, of course, I was Luigi. I remember my dad and I making it to the final castle and hearing this theme, then seeing the evil king pop out, I wasn’t much help and it was probably my dad who beat him for the first time, but just hearing it reminds me of that day where I was in awe seeing the person we’d been travelling the worlds to get to.

Want You Gone – Portal 2

The Portal series is one of my all time favourites, I would love to see a third entry but I doubt that’ll happen. Don’t worry, I’ll spare you that Valve joke.  GLaDOS is one of my favourite antagonists and can cut you with her sharp wit.
This song from the credits of Portal 2 sums her up and is awfully catchy too!

  1. Great post!

I also love video game soundtracks/music, and I believe composers are really under appreciated.

Last year I wrote a blog post about some of my favorite E3 video game trailers over the years and the music the trailers used, and this post reminded me of that.

    Keep up the great work!

  2. I love this post, I did one like this a number of months ago. Pallet Town is such an iconic song for me from the Pokemon games and the battle with Lance is a close second.

Zanarkand from Final Fantasy 10 is such a beautiful melody if you haven’t heard it 😊
